Pain-Free is our starting line.
Performance is the goal.

Performance Physical Therapy in Yarmouth, Maine for lifelong athletes who want PT that gets them stronger, not just back to baseline.

Dr. Helen Clark explains what Performance PT looks like at Maine Strength Co.

When injury hits, something shifts.

Suddenly you're not just managing pain. You're questioning whether the runs, the lifts, the hikes, the rounds of golf, the activities that make you feel like yourself are still available to you.

You find yourself asking: Will I ever get back to where I was?

It's the question we take most seriously here.

Most physical therapy is designed to get you out of pain and send you home. That isn’t enough if your goal is to keep running, keep lifting, keep skiing, keep doing the things you've built your life around.

So we built a practice that doesn't stop there.

We put you in the drivers seat of your health and performance.

Our Approach

Understand & Become an expert in your own body

Most physical therapy starts with a quick assessment and a treatment plan. We go deeper. Before we do anything, we get clear on what's actually happening: what your body is telling us, what your training looks like, what you're trying to do in the short term and the long term, and what you've already tried. This is the phase where most clients tell us they finally feel heard. It's also the phase where you start becoming an expert in your own body, because every decision we make from here forward is one you'll understand and be part of.

This is where we get you out of pain, back to your sport, back to capable. But we don't stop at the version of you that walked in. The body that gets you back to your activity isn't always the body that keeps you there. So we rebuild for what comes next. Our goal here is to help you build the buffer you need to increase your capacity to participate and perform in your chosen activities.

Rebuild For what comes next

With every client, we map out a plan for the long game. For some, that means monthly check-ins. For others, it means knowing the door is open if something starts feeling off. Either way, we're on your performance team for as long as you want us there. Modifying programming for new goals. Catching something when it's early so it doesn't slow you down. Being your accountability partner to help you chase what’s next.

Performance PT in Action

Sessions that are always 1:1. A plan shaped by your body and your goals.

At first, this looks like small wins. The hip pain you were bracing for at mile four that you realize still hasn’t shown up at mile six. Confidence creeping in as you approach a lift that previously caused back pain for days. The ski day you thought would cost you a week of recovery that resulted in normal soreness the next day. The moment that, in the middle of something you avoided for weeks out of fear of pain, you realize you haven't thought about your injury in days.

And then, sometimes, it looks like more than you expected. The race you didn't think you'd sign up for. The season you didn't think you'd get. The version of yourself you still thought of as a goal, now a reality.

This is what we're after. Schedule a discovery call to find out what it might look like for you.

Book A Free Discovery Call to get started

Every new client begins with a free 15-30 minute phone call. It's a conversation, not an evaluation — a chance to talk through what's going on, what you've tried, and what you're hoping to get back to. By the end of it, we'll both have a clear sense of whether this practice is the right fit for what you need. If we aren’t we will help you figure out next steps towards finding the best fit for you and your needs!

  • The cash-pay model gives us flexibility insurance won't. Initial evaluations are 90-minutes so we can get the full story and start your care. Follow up sessions are always 1:1 with the same physical therapist and they're always 60 minutes. We can build a plan together and stick with it without insurance dictating how often you can come in or when we have to discharge you.

  • We're an out-of-network provider, which means we don't bill insurance directly. We do accept Health Savings Accounts (HSA). Depending on your insurance, you may be able to be reimbursed for some or all of your services. We recommend calling your insurance company before your first visit to ask about your out-of-network physical therapy benefits. Upon request, we can provide a superbill that you may choose to submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement after each visit.

  • No. One of the benefits of working outside of insurance is that you don't have to wait on a referral or other paperwork to start. You can book directly.

  • No, though we have a different definition of "athlete" than most. If you care about your body, how it moves, and what it's capable of today and for the long term, you fit here. That includes runners, lifters, hikers, golfers, skiers, pickleball players, swimmers, cyclists, HYROX and hybrid athletes, tennis players, and the recreationally active adults who don't fit cleanly into any sport but want to keep doing what they love.

  • Most musculoskeletal injuries and movement issues, with a focus on active adults: running injuries, lifting injuries, post-surgical return-to-sport, chronic pain that hasn't resolved with traditional PT, and performance limitations that aren't quite "injuries" but are getting in the way of training.

Common diagnoses we work with include:

    • Low back pain and sciatica

    • Neck pain

    • Tension headaches

    • Shoulder injuries

    • Elbow pain (tennis elbow, golfer's elbow)

    • Hip pain and labral tears

    • Knee pain (runner's knee, meniscus injuries)

    • Foot and ankle pain (plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, sprains)

    • Post-surgical recovery

    • Overuse injuries from running, lifting, and training

If you're not sure whether your situation is a fit, the discovery call is the fastest way to find out.
